In the ever-shifting world of technology, an IT plan isn’t something you set and forget. It needs to evolve alongside the business, the economy, and the global landscape. For CIOs and IT leaders, now is an ideal moment to pause and critically reflect: Is your current IT strategy still aligned with your organization’s reality and goals?
To help guide this evaluation, we recommend a thoughtful framework of six key questions—designed to uncover where your strategy stands today and how it should adapt for tomorrow.
- When was your current IT plan developed?
Take stock of the versioning of your strategy. If your roadmap was created more than a year or two ago, it may no longer reflect current technologies, staffing dynamics, or business demands. - What drove your decision-making at that time?
Reflect on the environment during that planning cycle. Were you responding to remote work demands, cybersecurity threats, supply chain disruptions, or a market downturn? Understanding what shaped your approach helps clarify its original intent—and limitations. - What did “preparedness” look like then?
Think through the concrete steps you outlined to mitigate risk, adapt infrastructure, or secure systems. What tools, vendors, or protocols were chosen? Were there gaps in those preparations? - If no preparation had occurred, what would have happened?
This may feel hypothetical, but it’s powerful. Recalling the risks you avoided by acting—or those that caught you off guard—offers insight into the value of proactivity in your current and future planning. - How did you prepare, and where was the most friction?
Which parts of your strategy came together smoothly, and where did delays, budget constraints, or resistance arise? This helps identify patterns you can anticipate (and smooth over) in your next planning cycle. - Have conditions changed?
Perhaps the risk that triggered your plan has passed—or has evolved. Are your current technologies fit for what’s coming next? Does your strategy need to pivot, not just scale?
